IUI # 2.5 : INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF CONTEMPORARY THEATRE & PERFORMANCE
3-11 February 2012
iUi # 2.5 : International Festival of Contemporary Theatre & Performance has
been organized by Theatre of the Disturbed in collaboration with Institut
Français de Birmanie (French Cultural Centre of Myanmar). This project is
supported by ANA (Arts Network Asia- Singapore) and Goethe Institut
(Indonesia).
This project is part of the ongoing project of Theatre of the Disturbed in
promoting contemporary theatre and performance practice in Myanmar. This
project is also aimed at encouraging more intellectual exchange and
intercultural collaboration between local and international communities within
such domains.
SEMINAR (3-4 FEBRUARY 2012)
10:00 A.M – 5:00 P.M
The theme of the seminar this year is “Development of Contemporary Theatre
and Performance in Southeast Asia”.
Before the emergence of modern Southeast Asia’s nations as geopolitical
product of colonialism and nationalism, the polities in the Southeast Asia region
were linked through movements of people, trade in goods and exchange of
ideas travelling across seas and up and down the river system from the
precolonial times (Matthew Isaas Cohen & Laura Noszlopy, 2010). Given the
fact that Southeast Asia is the region of massive internal diversity, fuzzy cultural
borders, and complex social and cultural geography, the aim of this
interdisciplinary artistic project is to investigate the fragments of the region’s
cultural landscapes by examining contemporary artistic expressions such as
contemporary theatre and performance practice in the region. This
transnational artistic project is an ongoing dialogue among contemporary
Southeast Asian contemporary theatre and performance practitioners and it
has been conceived as a platform for long-term intercultural exchange and
interdisciplinary collaboration among artists, scholars and researchers with
particular interest in Southeast Asia and its vast cultural landscapes.

10:00 A.M – 5:00 P.M
The overall aim of this open course for theatre & performance is to empower
the local community with practical and intellectual skills regarding
contemporary theatre and performance for which there is virtually no resource
available in Myanmar. This year, during the period of 4 days, a series of
workshops and lectures conducted by local and international scholars and
performance practitioners will be made available to the local community with
free admission.
During the intensive 4-day course of capacity-building, basic knowledge on
different subjects regarding contemporary theatre and performance will be
transmitted through workshops and lectures by practising theatre artists,
4
performance practitioners and scholars which will contribute to build the
capacity of local art community. Historical, practical and theoretical knowledge
regarding contemporary theatre and performance is expected to be covered
during this course.
Different subjects such as acting/improvisation, stage design, playwriting,
meditation and yoga, history of Western theatre, performance, history of
Burmese theatre, history of Asian theatre, physical theatre will be covered
through a series of intensive workshops and lectures conducted by scholars and
performance practitioners from local and international communities.
Unlike the previous editions of “iUi” which focused on the performanceoriented
workshops/trainings, the nature of this 4-day course of
workshops/lectures will be capacity-building-oriented towards developing basic
understanding and skills necessary for theatre and performance practice.
8 artists and scholars from both local and international communities will be
conducting workshops and lectures for this course. The course is free of charge
and open only to the local community with a limited number of participants.
Along with the open course, there will be two other 4-day workshops
conducted by Catherine Dimaond (Eco-Theatre workshop) and Katsura Kan
(Butoh Dance workshop). Catherine’s Eco-Theatre workshop is the continuation
of her environmental theatre workshop conducted during the international
festival of contemporary theatre & performance (iUi # 02) in 2010 in Yangon,
Myanmar. Katsura Kan is an internationally renowned Butoh master giving the
very first Butoh course in Myanmar.
